How To Care For Your Oriental Area Rugs In SW Florida

Oriental or Persian wool or silk area rugs that have been taken care of will last for generations while maintaining their beauty and value.  Although wool and silk are an extremely durable rug making material, they are not indestructible. Normal wear and tear, household chemicals, improper cleaning, and indoor heating and air conditioning can take a toll. Following these guidelines can help ensure that your cherished area rug looks its best.

Use The Correct padding

Using the wrong padding or worse, no underlay at all—can damage your cherished wool or silk area rug. When a rug is placed directly on an uncarpeted surface, it gets squeezed between the floor and your feet (or anything you put on top of it), which can damage the rugs fibers. The type of underlay you use also depends on the type of surface you are placing your rug on. If you put your oriental rug in a room with wall-to-wall carpeting, then you can get away with a less durable underlayment.  Oriental Rug Salon provides a variety of rug pads that are custom cut to fit the unique needs of your area rug.

Clean Your Rug Regularly

If your Oriental or Persian rug is very old or in bad shape, you should take it to a specialist. But if your rug is in good condition, then general cleaning is something you can do yourself. It would be best to use a broom to sweep your area rug before using a vacuum cleaner (beater bars turned off) to complete the vacuuming process.

Sweep and vacuum the back first (when cleaning the back of the rug you can turn your beater bars on), which will cause dirt buildup to fall out of the pile. Then, lightly go over the face of the rug.  When using your vacuum cleaner, be careful to stay away from the fringe.

Professional Care Of Your Rug Regularly

Professional handwashing should be done every 2-3 years, depending on how much traffic your area rug receives.  Professional cleaning not only removes dirt, dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and sand that is stuck in the foundation of your rug, but it also adds moisture and conditioners back into the wool or silk fibers.

Oriental Rug Salon uses Gold Certified cleaning agents approved by the New Zealand Wool Institute and gently cleans your rugs by hand using a sponge and horsehair brush.

After your rug has been cleaned, it is rinsed using cold pH conditioned water and is moved to an air table to dry.  Upon completing the drying process, your area rug is inspected, and a conditioning agent is applied.  The final step of the process includes grooming the rug’s nap into position and preparing for delivery.
