How To Remove Holiday Food Spills From Oriental Rug

You’ve invited guests and family over for the holidays, prepared a wonderful dinner of turkey, gravy, and ham and during dinner, a plate is spilled on your beautiful Oriental rug. What do you do?

  1. First, don’t panic.  Immediately use a spoon to remove as much of the spill as possible
  2. Blot the area with a paper towel
  3. Prepare one teaspoon of a neutral detergent such as “Woolite” with ½ pint of warm water
  4. Apply the detergent solution to the spill, massage with your finger, allow to dwell for about three minutes and then blot, do not scrub.
  5. If staining remains use one teaspoon of household ammonia to one cup of warm water.  Mix the solution and test on an out-of-the-way area of the rug (the back of the rug or on a small corner area).  If there is no color transfer, you should be safe.  Apply the solution to the stain and work from the outer edge of the stain to the middle by lightly blotting.
