What are Caucasian Area Rugs and Where Do They Come From?

Virtually all Caucasian rugs are made with the symmetrical Turkish knot.  Most rugs are produced as village pieces with materials particular to an individual tribal province.  These rugs mainly display bold geometric designs with styles typical to the regions of Daghestan, Shirvan, Gendje, Kazakh and Quba.

The Caucasus region is an area situated between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in areas shared by Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia.  The Caucasus region is separated into northern and southern parts.  The Northern Caucasus is shared by Russia and Georgia, as well as the northernmost parts of Azerbaijan.  The southern part consists of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as northwestern Turkey.  The vast majority of Caucasian rugs are made in the country of Azerbaijan.

Antique Azerbaijani rugs can be found in the White House, the State Department, and every important museum in the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Louvre, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Vatican, and The Hermitage. In fact, during the funeral of the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, the Pope’s coffin was laid in state directly on top of an Azerbaijani rug.

The different names of the rugs, Kazak, Shirvan, Perpedil, or Kuba, for example, correspond to the different areas within Azerbaijan.

Within each region, there are often further classifications by city or style. For instance, Perepedil rugs come from the city of Perepedil, in the Kuba region of Azerbaijan, and thus are also classified as Kuba rugs.
