Why Do “Oriental” and Persian Area Rugs Cost “So Much?”

Weaving Oriental Rugs – A Labor of Love

When they say it takes a village, in terms of weaving oriental rugs, the statement is literal.

From start to finish, the production of a beautiful hand-woven area rug is very labor intensive.  A quality hand-woven 8X10 wool area rug could take as little as eight months to as long as eighteen months to weave, depending on knot count and other variables.  As a comparison, a machine-made rug could take as little as a couple of hours.

To help our readers appreciate what goes into making an “Oriental or Persian” rug, consider the following from a major supplier/exporter of wool rugs in India:

Once the wool has been sheared from the sheep –

  • Initial sorting of the raw wool takes 50-60 workers.
  • Another 15-20 are employed to wash the raw wool.
  • 60 skilled workers are needed to card and separate the wool. For hand-spinning wool into yarn, approximately 12,000 skilled artisans are required to create enough wool yarn to keep up with demand.
  • 35 master dye-makers will procure and develop dyes to be applied to the yarn.
  • A whopping 28,000 weavers will be employed under master weavers, and another 500 will be used to specialize in finishing.
  • 40-50 workers specialize in transportation.

THAT’S A LOT OF PEOPLE needed to create the rug in your living room, huh?

Hand-weaving beautiful area rugs is a labor of love, and each weaver dedicates a portion of their life to each completed rug.

The production of area rugs is a life-sustaining job for those weavers from small villages throughout Persia (and other trade routes).  Rug weaving creates thousands of jobs, and in many instances, the weaver can work from home thereby allowing families to take care of small children.

Monies earned from rug weaving allows families to save for college, provide food for their families, and allow for a sense of pride in knowing that someone, somewhere in another country will enjoy his or her craftsmanship and the love they put into the rug can last for many decades.  Rug weaving is passed down from generation to generation, and the funds earned help support the villages, the weavers and help provide a quality life for their families.
