Pet Accident And Oriental Rugs – Better Call Oriental Rug Salon

How We Clean Oriental Rugs When A Pet Has An Accident On Them

We LOVE our pets; and to many of us, pets are part of the family. They go everywhere with us and can’t wait for us to come home from a long day at work (or a trip to the grocery store). They love and depend on us for just about everything, and occasionally, they will have an “oops” moment right on top of our cherished wool or silk area rug. They didn’t mean to. Accidents happen.

The acidity in urine and feces from pet accidents can lead to mildew, mold growth, color fading, and strong, long-lasting odors in valuable wool or silk area rugs, so take care of the accident as soon as possible.

At Oriental Rug Salon, we understand how to treat “oops” moments better than most. As the “cleaner of choice” to many restoration companies, rug collectors, veterinarians, interior designers, and rug owners, we have the experience to deal with a wide range of odors. We custom tailor our approach to each area rug’s unique dyes, fibers, construction, and type of odor. There is never a “one size fits all.”

Oriental, Persian, and other wool or silk area rugs with a strong urine or feces odor are submerged in a special bactericide with live enzymes for about 8 hours to neutralize the urine salts, digestive enzymes, and odor. We then repeatedly rinse your rug with pH-balanced rinsing agents in cold water and continue to test and treat again, if necessary, until there is no further evidence of urine (or other odors). While time-consuming, this approach is by far the safest and most effective for your Oriental rugs and is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee. Once the area rug has been treated, it moves to the wash process.

About Our Oriental Rug Cleaning Process:

  • Photographing, Inspection & Estimate: Each rug trusted to Oriental Rug Salon is photographed, inspected with high-intensity and Xenon lighting, and goes through a rigorous 24-hour dye migration test. Upon inspection, the client receives an inspection report, a copy of the “before” pictures, and a service quote. Upon your written approval, your rug will be tagged for safe-keeping and moved to our wash bay for proper cleaning.
  • Pre-Cleaning: Also known as “dry particulate soil evacuation,” our pre-cleaning process includes the “dusting” of the area rug at 40,000 harmonic vibrations per minute to safely remove any loose dirt, grit, or sand that is left behind by even the most powerful vacuum cleaning machines.
  • Decontamination Bath: We use a special decontamination treatment to protect the natural fibers in your Oriental rug. Decontamination baths are necessary to neutralize odors and contamination caused by urine, insect infestations, mold, mildew, and smoke.
  • Hand Washing: For thorough cleaning, we submerge your Oriental rug in a “Jacuzzi” bath, aided by cold, pH-controlled water, and gently agitate the fibers and foundation of the rug with fine horsehair brushes, following our family’s long-established method. We have a process for area rugs that should be dry cleaned.
  • Rinsing: We rinse away all soils, contaminates, and cleaning agents until the rinse water achieves a clean and clear state.
  • Air Table Drying: We safely and thoroughly dry your area rug using a controlled atmosphere drying room.
  • Final Detailing: Your area rug will undergo a final inspection by our Rug Master and receive final spotting treatments to remove any foreign matter. This is done considering the integrity of your rug’s fibers and dyes. The rug’s nap is then groomed and set, with the final process consisting of wrapping and preparation for return to the client.

Every hand-knotted Oriental, Persian, Turkish, and other wool or silk area rug made by hand has a story to tell, and our job is to preserve the story while delivering the cleanest clean possible.

Each rug is washed by hand by an experienced textile professional. We do not use “automated batch washing equipment.” Every rug deserves individualized attention, and no two rugs are cleaned exactly the same way.
