How Long Does It Take To Weave An Oriental Rug?

Weave

The process of hand knotting rugs goes back a few thousand years. The oldest rug in the world is the “Pazyryk” carpet, which dates to the 5th century BCE.

The ancient art form and master craft of hand knotting rugs continues today. It starts with a design drawn on graph paper, called a “cartoon”. Then the weavers take the design and begin the process of making the rug, one knot at a time.

Each color of yarn is chosen according to the graphed design and then tied unto the “warp.”

Depending on the type of knots made, the size of the wool strands, and how tightly the knots are tied and pounded down, this will determine the density and level of quality of a rug. For fine “oriental” rugs a high knot count (kpsi) indicates a superior quality rug.  However, it is worth repeating, several different factors go into determining the quality of a rug, not just knot count. Quality of wool, design, place of origin are just a few of the additional things to consider. The back of the rug reveals much about its quality.

Oriental Rug Salon is a full-service Oriental, wool and silk area rug cleaning, repair and preservation company serving all of Naples, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Sanibel, Punta Gorda, Estero and Bonita Springs Florida.

Unlike most carpet cleaners in SW Florida who are not certified in Oriental rug cleaning and do not own a dedicated shop for the cleaning and preservation of fine area rugs, our specialists are well versed in all hand and machine-made area rug types.

So how long does it take to weave a quality wool area rug?  4X6 area rug with 400 knots per square inch (KPSI) 230 days.  6X9 at 400 KPSI 518 days.  8X10 at 400 KPSI 768 days and a 9X12 at 400 KPSI approximately 1036 days.

At Oriental Rug Salon we do not use impersonal automated rug cleaning equipment as we feel these are best left to car washes and factory production lines.  All rugs are washed by hand and must pass multiple inspection points before being declared clean.
