The Benefits Of Rug Padding For An Oriental Rug

Rug Pad

Is A Rug Pad Necessary? The short answer is, “definitely, yes.” Here’s five reasons why.

SAFETY

◦Rug pads prevent shifting of the rug when it is walked on. A rug pad is designed with a surface that will stick to both the floor and the rug. This is especially important if you are placing the rug on a hard, slick surface like tile or hardwood.

CLEANLINESS

◦Most rug pads have ridges or bumps that are able to trap dirt particles that can become imbedded in your rug. These ridges and bumps will also allow air flow between your rug and the floor, which will help greatly when vacuuming your rug.

INCREASING THE LIFE OF YOUR RUG

◦Rug pads can increase the life of your rug by protecting it from shifting and rubbing on the bottom, which will cause a lot of friction, resulting in a prematurely aged rug.  Placing a rug pad between the floor and your rug will help to lessen this damage and make your rug last much longer.

INCREASING THE LIFE OF YOUR FLOOR

◦Over time, damage to your floor can be caused by collections of dirt and grime underneath your rug.  These small abrasions can scratch your hardwood floors or wear down carpeting. Rug pads also help to prevent dyes from rugs staining carpet, wood or grout when there is a spill or migration.

COMFORT

◦Rug pads provide for a more cushioned walking surface. They also help to provide noise absorption. Rug pads prevent a rug from bunching up, which will detract from its appearance.

There are two main kinds of rug pads – Standard and Premium.

A standard rug pad is what you would expect to purchase from your local hardware store.  These types of pads provide minimal protection and will usually last about 3-5 years.

A premium rug pad will last 10-15 years, is made of a superior fabric, will prevent area rugs from slipping or bunching while supplying shock superior absorbency.  A quality pad will also provide maximum air circulation for your area rug, fire retardancy, will help control moth and other insect infestation and an anti-microbial to inhibit the growth of odor-causing mold, bacteria and mildew.

Extend the life and beauty of your Oriental, wool or silk area rug by providing it with its own “pad.”
