It is true: beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.  However, that doesn’t mean all Oriental rugs are created equal, right?  For example, no one would claim that a hand-knotted wool Shiraz area rug made in Iran that took over 14 months to make and one done created by machine by a major area rug manufacturer in a couple hours are of equal value. In evaluating the quality and value of an "Oriental" rug, there are criteria to consider that go far beyond the personal opinion of a salesperson or what you've read on how to determine the value of a particular rug. There are basic criteria by which all rugs can be compared and contrasted, and conclusions drawn concerning their quality and value. Dye Migration Due To Improper Spotting This embellishment is on a beautiful family heirloom rug that was “spot treated” by a carpet cleaning company in a client’s home.  Unfortunately, we see our fair share of rugs that have been damaged by non-certified or inexperienced carpet cleaners and it becomes our job to reverse the damage if at all possible. The carpet cleaning company in this instance used a non-approved spotter in an attempt to remove coffee stains and ended up “bleeding” the colors of the rug.  As you can see, several of the fields surrounding the embellishments show dye migration due to improper spotting.  This is a good example of what can happen when you hire an inexperienced cleaning company or try to spot clean in your home. This rug [...]

A Persian Cartoon (Stencil) of an Oriental Rug Design Many hand-tufted rugs use high-quality wool so the finished product looks and wears much like a hand-knotted rug. Unlike a hand-knotted rug, a hand-tufted rug is created without tying knots. Making a hand-tufted area rug takes a fraction of the time to make, therefore greatly reducing the cost. As a result, hand-tufted rugs are very affordable area rugs. These wool rugs are made with a tool called a "tufting gun." Loops of wool are pushed through a backing called a “cartoon” that has been imprinted with the overall design of the finished area rug.  When the rug maker is through with this process another foundation, called a scrim is applied with latex glue. When this dries, the final protective cloth backing [...]

Whether it’s wine, coffee, Kool-Aid, urine, feces or paint, the first step is to remove as much of the liquid or solid from the rug- as soon as possible. Paper towels work well. Keep blotting until you no longer see any transfer to the paper towel. After blotting, many spills will require diluting. If it is clear that much of the spilled substance is still in the rug, dilute it with water or club soda (assuming that the substance is water soluble). That may mean a half cup for a small spill or as much as a quart of water for a major spill. Don’t get the rug sopping wet unless you need to. (Please note that some rugs have unstable dyes that may run if you put water on [...]

So you decided to spend a little more money than you have in the past on synthetic area rugs and want to upgrade to wool or silk textiles.  Wool, if cared for properly, can last for generations and often our clients pass their wool area rugs down from one generation to the next.  It’s not unusual for us to clean rugs that are 80 years or older. Wool area rugs, especially those that are hand-knotted are more expensive than the more popular fibers, such as nylon, olefin, and polyester, but for a reason. Wool is of higher quality, feels better, lasts longer and is a better investment.  In addition, while it may only take thirty minutes to make a machine made 8X10 synthetic area rug, a rug of similar [...]
