Oriental Rug Cleaning Versus Carpet Cleaning – What’s The Difference?
SW Florida’s Choice For Oriental Rug Cleaning And Repairs
Last week a customer contacted us to inspect and possibly repair a 90+-year-old Persian Tabriz. What we saw when the rug came to our shop was horrific. This client had allowed a local dry cleaning company to clean her antique wool area rug and what they did to it was an absolute crime.
The first mistake they made was to use an improper cleaning solution and rogue technique that ran the colors of the rug. They then proceeded to use a carpet cleaning wand, similar to the one used by companies such as Number One Carpet Cleaning, to extract the water and literally destroy her rare Tabriz by ripping the fringe from the rug!
What could she have done to prevent this from happening? ASK QUESTIONS before you trust your area rug to just anyone.
WHAT QUESTIONS? First… ask HOW they clean Rugs. It must be FULL Immersion cleaning!
ASK what they clean with! It MUST be a Glycerin-based rug solution that is adjusted for the dye type of your rug. The cleaning solution must be Wool Safe approved.
Ask how do they get the solution out of the rug. Make sure they use a full submersion rinse, NOT extract it with vacuum or carpet cleaning equipment.
Ask do they clean wall-to-wall carpets also. “Tell them you have a few rooms of wall to wall that needs to be cleaned. If they say they can clean it…. FIND a different company!! The truth is that there are quite a few carpet cleaners that present themselves as Oriental Rug Cleaning experts. You must ASK questions to weed these off your list!
ASK them if you can come to their location and visit their rug cleaning plant.
TELL them you’ve always wanted to see how area rugs are cleaned. If the company balks at your questions or doesn’t have a full-service rug cleaning plant, Find a different company!
A company that specializes in Oriental rug cleaning and repair will gladly answer all your questions and will be happy to meet you in person and provide you with a tour of their facilities. Make sure you ask questions, take time meet the people who will actually be doing the work on your rugs.
Be careful as most dry cleaners and carpet cleaning companies do not own a rug cleaning plant and either send the area rugs out to a high production mechanical rug cleaning plant or to a local carpet cleaning company who likely cleans the rug in their parking lot.
Feel free to call us at Oriental Rug Salon at any time. We welcome your questions and YES, you are invited to visit our rug cleaning plant anytime.
