How can you tell a “good” Oriental rug from a “not so good one?”

We’re often asked, how you can tell a good area rug from a not so good one?

If you can see the same design on the back as on the front, that means the rug is more than likely woven. Buy that.  If you cannot see the same design on the back of the rug as you can the front, that rug is “tufted” and is not the same quality as a handwoven one.

Wool is the best as it is practically indestructible and sustainable. Hand-woven is the most valuable. It’s a piece of the weaver’s soul and many, many hours, months or years were put into making the rug.  There are also machine-woven rugs made by Karastan that are industry recognized as quality manufacturing however they are not hand woven and can be made in less than an hour depending on the size of the rug.

A “tufted rug” has a canvas or burlap backing material on the back of the rug.  These type of rugs are typically manufactured in China or India.  These rugs use a backing material because the wool is glued into position instead of woven.  The canvas is used to hide the “ugliness” of the glue and in many cases, the latex is inferior and will disintegrate in five to ten years or if the rug is washed, comes into contact with moisture or pet urine.

Woven rugs are designed to last for generations if properly taken care of.
