Uneducated Carpet Cleaners Can Ruin An Oriental Area Rug

Recently we were contacted by a frantic rug owner who advised that her antique Heriz Persian rug was “ruined” by a carpet cleaner she hired to clean her wall-to-wall carpeting.

As the technician was in her home, he asked if she would like her area rug “cleaned.”  She asked if they had experience with area rugs because she heard they should be cleaned in a specialty shop and he told her, “we clean hundreds of them annually, not a problem.”  Believing the carpet cleaning technician knew what he was doing, she agrees to allow him to proceed.

Having other things to do in her house, she returned to her office, and approximately twenty minutes later the technician advised he was finished and collected his invoice.  She even tipped him twenty dollars.

Because the carpeting was wet, she was unable to take a look at the area rug and trusted that everything turned out fine.  After all, if there were a problem, the technician would have told her; right?

Approximately three hours after the carpet cleaning technician left her home, she did a walk thru and advised that she almost passed out.  The area rug she treasured more than anything (it was handed down from her great-grandmother) had bled.  Red and Blue dyes had migrated into the crème areas of the field and border as well as into the fringe.  Horrified she contacted the well-known carpet cleaning company and they advised that it “wasn’t like that when they left” and either she must have done something or she had a cheap area rug.

How To Clean An Oriental Rug

There’s only one way to make sure your area rug is completely clean, and that is a full immersion rug cleaning by an experienced area rug cleaning company.  The keyword here is “area rug cleaning company” NOT a carpet cleaning company.

At Oriental Rug Salon, we wash 95% of all area rugs by hand, one at a time by fully immersing them in cold water, using the safest cleaning agents available.  Our technicians are experienced and certified.  They do not clean tile or wall-to-wall carpeting.  Their only job is to deliver the most thorough cleaning possible.  They are experts in Oriental rug cleaning and repair.

Before washing, each area rug goes through a thoroughly exhaustive inspection procedure, is tested for dye stability and goes through a “Rug Badgering” process designed to deliver 40,000+ penetrating harmonic vibrations/min deep into the back of a rug.  This harmonic process ensures we can remove sand, grit, pollen, larva casings and other allergens that are deep within the foundation of the rug and out of reach from vacuum cleaners.

After cleaning, rugs are dried quickly on an air table in a controlled environment.  They are inspected; a finishing agent and allergen-free deodorizer is applied, and the rug is prepared to go home.

With on-site carpet cleaning, it is impossible to perform a 24-hour bleed test, to RugBadger each area rug, to fully submerge a rug for the most profound clean possible, and there is no way a carpet cleaning company can control the drying at a clients home.  At best, with a carpet cleaning company, you can expect a “knock-off-the-dust” surface cleaning.  At worst, well, like the client who made this blog post a reality.

The technicians at Oriental Rug Salon are experts at cleaning all types of rugs, and we specialize in traditional, Oriental, Chinese, Persian rugs, Berbers, Kilims, Flokatis, Dhurries, Navajo, modern and designer rugs.

Oriental Rug Salon is a full-service Oriental rug cleaning and repair facility serving client throughout SW Florida, and in fact, clients from around the world.  We are a Certified partner with the prestigious Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).  In addition, we are A+ rated with the Better Business Bureau and a five-year-in-a-row-winner of the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award.

Never allow a carpet cleaning company the opportunity to ruin your beautiful area rug, call on a professional.

Oh, about that area rug that was bled by an uneducated carpet cleaner, we were able to remove most of the bleeding and dye migration into the rugs fringe.  The client was happy.
