How To Care For Your Oriental Rug At Home

Oriental, Persian, Wool, And Silk Area Rugs Are Made To Last

Walk All Over That Rug – It’s essential to understand that even though a hand-woven rug is valuable, it’s made to be used.  Please don’t keep it in a room by itself for fear of walking on it.  With usage, most hand-knotted rugs gain a certain patina that enhances their beauty.  If you’re not going to enjoy it, why have it?

Vacuuming Is Good – You should sweep AND vacuum your area rug regularly.  Sweeping helps to dislodge contaminants such as pollen, soils, and dust mites, making vacuuming more thorough.  Watch out for the fringes.  We’ve repaired many area rugs with fringe that were involved in a fight with a vacuum cleaner.

Hand-woven area rugs can benefit from being turned over, swept, and vacuumed.  Lift the rug carefully and tap on the front, and you will see all the dirt that has filtered down.  Yikes!

Turn, Turn, Turn – Rotating your area rug occasionally (twice a year) will help even wear patterns and prevent unforeseen fading.  When rugs are exposed to the sun evenly, the colors harmonize, and the rug ages nicely.  If parts of the rug receive too much or too little sun, one side will fade faster than the other.  Always make sure that your area rug has received the benefit of a quality fiber protector.  This will protect against sun fading and spills and make vacuuming easier as contaminates and solids cannot stick to the rug’s fibers.

See Spot? Go!  Spot clean your area rug immediately after a spill.  A water spot should be blotted then dried with a hairdryer set at a warm temperature.  Try to dry both sides if possible.  Anything else should first be blotted with paper or terry towels (white) to absorb as much as possible, and then apply baking soda to the spot for a few minutes to absorb the rest.  Once it dries, vacuum off the baking soda.  Oriental Rug Salon also has WoolSafe approved spotters available in our store.

If you are unable to remove the spot, DO NOT resort to home remedies found online as they could set the stain permanently, call Oriental Rug Salon for assistance.

Professional Rug CleaningOriental Rug Salon, industry certification bodies, and manufacturers of fine area rugs recommend they be cleaned every 2-3 years as part of a regular maintenance program.  Fine hand-knotted area rugs are designed with love and care and made by hand to last many generations with proper cleaning and simple maintenance.
