For many families, pets are part of their family and offer comfort, joy, and yup occasionally will have accidents on our Oriental, Persian, or other wool or silk area rug.
Oriental Rug Salon is an expert at pet urine and odor removal in wool or silk textiles. Complete urine removal as soon as it occurs is vital in protecting your area rug’s looks, value, and structural integrity. Without proper treatment, urine can lead to dry rot, dye migration, permanent staining, and poor indoor air quality due to bacteria off-gassing.
Ways Pet Urine Can Damage a Cherished Area Rug:
- Urine can cause fiber damage by creating a moist environment for mold and mildew to thrive. In addition, this moist environment can attract pests.
- Pet urine can cause bleaching and bleeding of dyes in the rug. As urine dries, it crystallizes and turns into salt. These crystals have very high alkalinity, which acts as a bleaching agent on the rug fibers.
- Dried urine crystals cause unwelcome odors and off-gassing that only becomes more pungent over time if left untreated.
- Decomposing urine may also stain your valuable rug leading to dry rot and permanent damage.
Oriental Rug Salons Approach to Urine and Odor
- The area rug is inspected with Xenon lighting to determine the level of urine or feces saturation. Knowing this information will allow our technicians to personalize the bacteria treatment process.
- The next step is to test for rouge dyes that the urine or feces may have compromised. Without this test, the colors on your rug may have become unstable and “bleed” when the rug is fully submerged.
- The area rug is dusted at 40,000 vibrations per minute to dislodge contaminants from the rug foundation, such as soils, urine salts, dust mites, pollen, and dander.
- The appropriate spotting techniques are applied to affected areas of the rug
- A specialty bath is prepared with live enzymes, and the area rug is submerged for 24-hours. The enzymes digest the bacteria in the urine and feces as a food source
- The bath is drained, and the rug is treated with a specialty application of cleaning solutions, a neutralizer, and organic deodorant
- The bath is drained a second time. pH-conditioned rinsed, and then introduced to our usual cleaning process.
Advice: If your pet has an accident on your area rug, clean the area immediately with a neutral pH spotter or a mixture of 50% WHITE vinegar and 50% water. Mix the vinegar and water and test in an inconspicuous place on the rug to ensure the colors do not migrate. If safe, heavily blot directly onto the affected area, allow to dwell for 3-4 minutes and then blot as much of the mixture as possible. You can then place a fan on the treated area or use a hairdryer to dry it.
