What Is Dusting An Oriental Rug?

Oriental and Persian Rug Dusting

Did you know an 8 X 10 wool area rug can hold approximately 10 lbs of “dirt and other contaminates” before appearing dirty? This “dust” is unhealthy for the life of your treasured Oriental, wool, or silk area rug and creates the perfect conditions for allergens, dust mites, bed bugs, and bacteria. In addition, this “dust” is abrasive to the fibers of your area rug and can lead to traffic lanes, degradation of face fibers and fringe, and create an overall “ugliness” in appearance.

What Is Rug Dust?

The “dust” removed by rug dusting can include a mixture of many things, most commonly:

  • Allergens
  • Dirt/Soil/Sand
  • Dead Skin Cells
  • Worn Rug Fibers
  • Food Particles
  • Pet Dander
  • Moth and Carpet Beetle Larvae
  • Dust mites

Allergens, such as soil, pollen, dust mites, and pet dander, embed themselves deep into your rug and are continually released with each step you and your family make. Another primary make-up of the dust in area rugs is disgusting dead skin cells, which are constantly sloughing off everyone’s body. It’s the same principle as when your mattress can double in weight from the same dead cells; the only difference is we can remove them from your rugs.

If you have pets, your rugs are a giant, powerful magnet for pet dander, fleas, and mites which we all know can irritate allergies of you, your friends, and your family.

What Is Rug Dusting??

Vacuuming just doesn’t cut it.

Vacuums work great on the loose weave of your carpet and are great for maintaining the health of your rug. Still, even the most powerful vacuums are ineffective at removing soils deep in the tight weave of Oriental, Wool, Silk, and other specialty area rugs.

Whether you have a handmade Persian rug or a machine-made Chinese rug, vacuuming will only remove the debris on the surface. Frequent vacuuming is an all-important part of keeping your area rug looking great. Still, every carpet needs a good dusting and professional cleaning every two years to keep it looking clean and sanitized.

Soil and Debris Causes Rug Damage

Each step you make on a rug full of dust can do irreparable damage to its core construction. Dirt and soils are very abrasive and can break down the fibers from the inside. Frequently, this will cause traffic lanes, pile distortion, and some fading from the wear on the pile.

The Rug Dusting Process Explained

Years ago, our grandmothers would hang their area rugs over a clothesline or fence and “beat the cooties, dust, and dirt” out of them with a broom. This process was typically performed after the rugs had been vacuumed, and you’d be amazed as to the contaminates, dirt, and sand our grandmother was able to get out with this manual “dusting” process.

Fast forward to today, and technology allows us to supercharge the “dusting” process.

At Oriental Rug Salon, our dusting process begins with a thorough vacuuming of both sides of the area rug with a powerful commercial vacuum cleaner. Once both sides have been vacuumed in two directions, we place the rug face down on a grid and use a specialized dusting machine that provides 40,000 harmonic vibrations per minute. This vibrating action dislodges all deep-set soil, sand, dander, and other contaminants that can rob your rug of its beauty and life expectancy.

We offer rug dusting as a stand-alone service for clients that may not require a professional submersion cleaning just yet but do want the dust and soil removed between professional cleanings. Our rug dusting process will not rid your rugs of spots, stains, or odors, but if you have unexpected guests arriving and don’t have time to clean your rugs thoroughly, this is a great alternative. This way, you know your rugs are free of loose dirt, dust mites, and pet dander.
