Professional Area Rug Cleaning For The Life Of Your Oriental Rug
So you decided to spend a little more money than you have in the past on synthetic area rugs and want to upgrade to wool or silk textiles. Wool, if cared for properly, can last for generations and often our clients pass their wool area rugs down from one generation to the next. It’s not unusual for us to clean rugs that are 80 years or older.
Wool area rugs, especially those that are hand-knotted are more expensive than the more popular fibers, such as nylon, olefin, and polyester, but for a reason. Wool is of higher quality, feels better, lasts longer and is a better investment. In addition, while it may only take thirty minutes to make a machine made 8X10 synthetic area rug, a rug of similar size made of wool or silk can take 18 months or more to create.
The challenge with wool is many don’t understand how to properly care for it. Like any carpet, regular vacuuming is important. Vacuum once per week per occupant in your household. That’s a good rule of thumb (at least for the heavy trafficked areas).
Wool also hides dirt, which is a good thing because no one wants to see a dirty area rug. However, this is dangerous because many people clean their area rugs based on appearance. Don’t wait until your beautiful wool or silk area rug looks dirty before you vacuum or have it professionally cleaned. If you do, you really waited too long. Clean it based on a schedule. Talk to your professional rug cleaner for recommendations.
Remember, wool is like any other fiber and it can wear out. Dirt, grit, and sand (and other soils) damage it with abrasive action from foot traffic. You might compare this to putting sand on a piece of Plexiglas and stepping on it. The surface will become damaged. Although wool isn’t plastic, it can still be damaged.
So congratulations on your new, beautiful wool carpet. Just be sure to take good care of it with regular vacuuming and professional cleaning.
