Oriental Rugs – How To Remove Spots And Urine Without Damage To Your Area Rug

Stains

Whether it’s wine, coffee, Kool-Aid, urine, feces or paint, the first step is to remove as much of the liquid or solid from the rug- as soon as possible. Paper towels work well. Keep blotting until you no longer see any transfer to the paper towel.

  • After blotting, many spills will require diluting. If it is clear that much of the spilled substance is still in the rug, dilute it with water or club soda (assuming that the substance is water soluble). That may mean a half cup for a small spill or as much as a quart of water for a major spill. Don’t get the rug sopping wet unless you need to.

(Please note that some rugs have unstable dyes that may run if you put water on them so be sure to test a small area first.  Place some water on a white paper towel or cloth and press the paper towel against the colored portion of the area rug for about 30 seconds.  If no color transfers to the paper towel you should be safe to saturate the area rug).

  • Now blot the stained area until there is no more transfer to the paper towel or white washcloth.
  • Once you’ve finished blotting, place a fan on the area rug to promote drying.  If you don’t have a fan, you can use a hair dryer or simply blot as much as you can and then place a few paper towels on the wet area, stand on them for a few seconds and then allow the area rug to air dry.

If the rug is still stained after all your efforts, consider calling the professionals at Oriental Rug Salon as soon as you can. Very often the spill will need professional attention and specialty spotting solutions.

Do not use over-the-counter spot removers on Oriental rugs that are formulated for use on wall-to-wall carpeting. They will harm the wool pile of your rug.

Urine

Urine stains are probably the most common of all stains in Oriental rugs. They present a special problem because urine actually changes the chemical composition of dyes once it has had a chance to set. The best strategy is to remove the urine as fast as possible by blotting the affected area.

  • After removing as much as possible, rinse the area with a 50/50 solution of water and distilled WHITE vinegar. If a urine stain is already dry when you discover it, act as quickly as possible anyway, and get the rug to Oriental Rug Salon for treatment and cleaning if the stain won’t budge.
