A Gabbeh is a hand-woven pile rug of coarse quality characterized by an abstract design that relies upon open fields of color and a playfulness with geometry. This type of rug is popular among the populations of the Zagros Mountains of Iran, including Kurdish, Luri and Qashqai people and is usually crafted by women. The word Gabbeh loosely translates to raw, uncut or unfinished, which was true decades ago. Today’s modern Gabbeh rugs are filled with bright colors and bold designs with weavers giving free rein to their creativity. The only thing that has remained unchanged is the unmistakable uniqueness of each rug. Weavers of Gabbeh rugs do not follow any patterns. Instead, they draw inspiration from their surroundings and from everyday life, which contributes to the exclusive designing. Every [...]

Beautiful hand-knotted area rugs are woven with love, and in many instances, take months or years to create.  They are designed to last many generations with proper cleaning and should NEVER be “cleaned” in the home. Why not? There are two main reasons. The first is that you cannot thoroughly clean a woven textile in the home. Second, in most cases, you are causing long-term damage to the area rug. In-plant rug cleaning is recommended for Oriental, Persian, wool and silk area rugs. They should never be cleaned in your home like wall-to-wall carpet.  Hand-knotted area rugs require dusting, a specialized cool bath, and wool or silk specific cleaning solutions to ensure a thoroughly exhaustive cleaning. Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care’s sister company, Oriental Rug Salon, cares for the finest [...]

Approximately 33% of all Oriental, Persian, Turkish and other wool and silk area rugs Oriental Rug Salon is asked to clean contains pet urine. Pets can wreak havoc on nice rugs, especially when they have accidents. Pet urine, feces and “hairballs” can leave permanent stains and cause dye migration if not addressed quickly. Pet urine can also cause permanent damage to your wool and silk area rugs and create an unhealthy indoor environment. When urine is first deposited, it has a pH of about 5 or 6, which is on the acid side of the pH Scale. It is easier to remove right then when it is fresh. Once it dries, it turns “alkaline” or to a high pH between 10 to12 on the scale and becomes more difficult to [...]

Rug Badger Removing Dirt From Rug That Was Previously Vacummed Hand-knotted area rugs hide substantially more dry soil, sand, allergens, dust mites and other contaminants than wall-to-wall carpeting due to the construction of its foundation (woven versus glued). Because hand-knotted area rugs hide abrasive contaminates so well, if not professionally cleaned and “dusted” on a regular basis, they will develop “traffic lanes,” suffer color loss and host a variety of allergens out of reach of even the most powerful vacuum cleaners. Studies performed by the Eureka Company found that a 9 x 12 rug can hold as much as 87 pounds of particulate soil. The foundation of a hand-knotted area rug is created by a series of warps and wefts.  Basically, in most cases, a woven area rug has a [...]
