If your cherished Persian or Oriental rug was involved in a flood, or worse, a mud bath due to Hurricane Ian, give Oriental Rug Salon a call. We're finding that many restoration companies are telling rug owners that their rugs are "ruined" and to throw them out. On the contrary, most rugs can be saved at the hands of professionals. In this photo, our technician arrived at a client's home and found their rug covered in mud due to Hurricane Ian breaching the home. The technician removes the mud, prepares the textile for transport, and brings it to our 6,000 sq. ft. rug facility in Cape Coral, where it will receive professional disinfecting and cleaning. Oriental Rug Salon is SW Florida's leading Oriental and Persian rug cleaning, restoration, and repair [...]

In Hurricane Ian’s aftermath, many rug owners are left to deal with flooded wool or silk area rugs. If you find yourself with damp or flooded Oriental or Persian rugs, remember two words:  extraction and drying. Depending on the amount of flood water in your rug, you’ll likely need to consult with a rug cleaning professional (not a carpet cleaner) for advice and/or service.  There are a few things you can do immediately to remedy the flood situation in your home. Storm Water Extraction Extraction is the most important thing to remember when storm water floods your area rug.  You’ll want to act quickly and begin the extraction process right away. Hopefully, you have electricity and access to a wet/dry shop-vacuum.  A shop vac will be the most effective tool a rug owner can [...]

What You Can Do If Your Oriental Rug Is Damaged During A Hurricane Or Other Water Intrusion Event. When it comes to wool and silk area rugs and water damage, time is the enemy. The longer a rug remains wet, the more likely permanent damage will occur. Dry rot and migrating dyes are two issues that may affect rugs that stay wet for an extended period. Suppose you have a tufted rug with a cloth glued to the back, the risk of delamination (the material separates from the back of the rug) skyrockets when the rug is soaked for too long. Rugs can also discolor and turn brownish. All of these issues caused by water intrusion may or may not be correctable. The faster you respond to correcting the situation, [...]

Carpet moths can wreak havoc and happily destroy your beautiful Oriental wool and Persian area rugs. Carpet moths are tiny – only 5–8 mm long – and scamper around, only flying when it's warm (and in SW Florida, it's always warm). They shun light and hide in dark areas, laying batches of eggs that hatch larvae. The larvae then begin to eat the face yarns of your cherished area rug, causing holes and loss of pile. For a video on how to identify moth damage click here. How Can I Help Prevent Moth Damage A rug owner's first line of defense is to sweep their area rug with a broom (this creates a safe agitation and loosens sand and larvae) and then vacuum the rug weekly. Not just a quick [...]

Oriental and Persian Rug Repairs, Cleaning, and Appraisals As time passes, your cherished Oriental or Persian area rug will accumulate soils, dust mites, pollen, spills, and, if you own pets, perhaps pet accidents too. The buildup of these contaminates at first may not be noticeable, but give it a few years, and you'll see that the colors are not as vibrant as they once were, and you may start to see "sanding" (worn areas). To maintain your area rug's value, look, and longevity, it is essential to have it professionally cleaned every two to three years. If you start to see unraveled side cords or fringe, they should be repaired immediately, especially if the area rug is hand-knotted, to prevent unraveling or foundation damage to the rug. Oriental Rug Salon's [...]
